November/December: Cultural Competency and Critical Thinking Discussion
As a future physician, you will need to be knowledgeable of cultures unlike your own and aware of different perspectives about various topics about international cultures, different identities, and “norms” in U.S. culture.
Since it is the end of November, something on all of our minds is Thanksgiving break and the holiday (whether it be the historical story, the food, family visits, Black Friday, finally a break from school, or exams creeping up). However, there are differing opinions on how this holiday is typically taught in schools and generally perceived in the U.S. HSAFP wants to provide you with some differing perspectives to refine your critical thinking, written communication, and cultural competency skills.

After reading, answer these questions:
- What are the differences between these four articles? In other words, we know that all of these articles are about Thanksgiving in some way. However, you will want to summarize these articles in a few sentences and point out what each author chooses to focus their article on.
- What descriptive words would you use to explain the author’s tone in the articles? Use a direct quotation from each article.
- After reading these articles, what are your thoughts about the celebration of Thanksgiving? Which article was the most impactful to you, and why? You will also want to try to make connections between your prior knowledge, your experiences, and how you analyzed these articles!
